Replacing a Bathroom Vanity: What to Disconnect and Check First

Replacing a vanity is less about muscle than about knowing what to disconnect and what to inspect first. I’ll focus on the checks that help you avoid a surprise leak, a stuck countertop, or a cabinet that won’t fit back into the same space.

A bathroom vanity swap can look simple right up until you start disconnecting plumbing and discover that the old cabinet was hiding a few compromises. Before you lift anything out, it helps to slow down and check the pieces that turn a straightforward replacement into an afternoon of improvisation.

Start with the plumbing you’ll need to separate

The first items to locate are the hot and cold shutoff valves under the sink, the supply lines that run to the faucet, and the drain assembly from the trap up to the sink tailpiece. If the vanity has a plumbing access panel, open it and trace how much room you actually have to work. Tight clearances can make a simple disconnect awkward, especially when the shutoffs sit close to the cabinet back or the drain is boxed in by drawers.

Turn each shutoff valve gently to confirm that it moves and closes. If a valve is stiff, frozen, or doesn’t seem to stop the water fully, treat that as a problem to solve before removal day. A shutoff that won’t close reliably can turn a vanity project into an urgent plumbing job faster than you’d like.

Check the shutoffs while the sink is still in place Turn the faucet on, close each shutoff, and confirm that the water really stops. If a valve drips, won’t turn, or needs to be forced, plan for repair or replacement before you disconnect the sink.

Measure what the new vanity has to fit around

Once you know the plumbing is serviceable, look at the vanity’s footprint and the obstacles around it. Width is only part of the story. You also need to account for baseboards, uneven walls, outlet locations, and any trim that may make the cabinet sit proud of the wall in one spot and tight in another. Older bathrooms often have walls that aren’t perfectly square, so a replacement vanity that matches the old one’s nominal size may still need a little adjustment.

Check where the sink drain lines up with the cabinet interior. Some vanities have open centers that make plumbing easy; others have drawers or solid panels that leave less room for the trap. If the new cabinet has a different interior layout than the old one, verify that the trap and supply lines can still connect without awkward bending or crowding.

Look closely at the countertop before you disconnect anything

If your vanity has a separate countertop, inspect how it’s attached to the cabinet and whether the sink is integrated into the top. A light cultured-marble top may lift off after the plumbing is removed, while a stone top or an all-in-one sink-and-counter assembly can be far heavier and more fragile than it looks. Don’t assume you can carry it alone just because the cabinet below feels manageable.

Check for caulk along the backsplash, the wall seam, and the edge where the top meets the cabinet. Caulk alone doesn’t always mean the top is locked down, but it can hide clips, adhesive, or a surprisingly stubborn bond. If the top is cracked, swollen at the sink cutout, or already loose, plan for extra care so it doesn’t break when the vanity comes out.

Check the wall, floor, and cabinet base for hidden issues

With the doors open and a flashlight in hand, inspect the cabinet base for water damage, moldy plywood, or soft spots near the sink trap and supply lines. The cabinet may have been doing a better job of hiding leaks than containing them. If the back of the vanity is damaged, that often points to a slow leak that should be addressed before the new unit goes in.

Also look at the wall behind the vanity and the floor beneath it. Mark any low spots, paint damage, or gaps where the old cabinet probably wasn’t sitting flush. Those irregularities matter because they affect leveling, fastening, and caulk coverage later. If the floor slopes or the wall bows, the replacement vanity may need shims or scribing to sit neatly.

Make a simple disconnect plan before you loosen the first nut

It’s worth deciding in advance what gets disconnected, in what order, and where the water is going if a line still contains residual pressure. Shut off the water, open the faucet to relieve pressure, and keep a bucket, towel, and wrench within reach. If the supply lines are old or corroded, consider replacing them instead of reusing them. That’s often the point where a modest parts purchase saves a second round of disassembly later.

If the sink drain is glued or badly corroded, inspect whether the trap and tailpiece can come apart cleanly or whether you’ll need replacement parts on hand. Having a new P-trap, fresh supply lines, and a tube of plumber’s putty or sealant ready can keep the project moving once the old vanity is out. It’s much easier to replace those small parts while everything is open than after the cabinet is already sitting in place.

A successful vanity replacement usually starts with observation, not removal. Check the shutoffs, measure the clearances, study the countertop attachment, and look for damage that the old cabinet has been hiding. Once you know what’s there, you can disconnect with a lot less guesswork and a lot fewer trips to the hardware store.
