Smooth metal makes drill bits skate instead of cut, especially when you’re starting a hole in hardware, brackets, or thin sheet. The fix is usually less about brute force and more about giving the bit a place to start, keeping the work still, and letting the cutting edge bite gradually.

Start with a mark the bit can actually follow

A simple pencil mark is rarely enough on metal. Use a scribe, nail, or sharp marker to make the location obvious, then create a small dimple with a center punch and hammer. That indentation gives the drill bit a physical seat so it’s less likely to drift when the spinning tip first touches the surface.

If you don’t have a center punch, even a pointed nail can help in a pinch, though it won’t be as clean. The goal isn't to make a deep crater; it’s to make a controlled starting point that keeps the bit from skating across the metal’s slick surface.

Before you drill the final hole: check that your mark is where the hardware really needs to land, especially on visible brackets or alignment-sensitive parts. It’s much easier to correct a dot than a hole.

Clamp the work so the bit isn’t fighting movement

A wandering bit can be caused by the material shifting, not just the bit slipping. Clamp the metal to a stable bench, and if the piece is small or awkward, use a scrap board underneath or beside it to help support the setup. A loose workpiece tends to twist just as the bit starts to cut, which throws off the entry point.

For thin sheet metal, backing it with wood can also reduce grabbing as the bit breaks through. That doesn’t eliminate the need for clamping, but it gives the drill a more stable target and can improve the first contact enough to keep the bit centered.

Use a smaller pilot hole first

Starting with the final-size bit is one of the easiest ways to lose control on smooth metal. A small pilot hole gives the larger bit a guide, and it also reduces the pressure you need at the beginning. Once the pilot hole is through, the larger bit has less chance to wander when you open the hole to its final size.

This is especially helpful on stainless steel, hardened hardware, and thin metal where the surface can resist the bit just long enough for it to slip. If you’re drilling a series of holes, the pilot hole also helps you stay consistent from one location to the next.

Let the drill cut instead of forcing it

Too much pressure can make a bit skate before it bites, and too little pressure can let it polish the surface without starting. Aim for steady, moderate pressure and a slower speed than you’d use on wood or plastic. Metal rewards patience here: once the tip is engaged, keep the drill aligned and let the bit do the work.

A sharp bit matters too. Dull bits wander more easily because they don’t bite quickly enough to establish the hole. If the bit squeals, smokes, or seems to rub more than cut, it may need sharpening or replacement.

Use lubrication when the metal calls for it

A little cutting fluid or light oil can help the bit start and keep heat down as the hole develops. That’s especially useful on tougher metals, where friction makes the bit more likely to skid or overheat. Less heat usually means better cutting, cleaner chips, and a more controlled start.

You don’t need to flood the area. A small amount applied at the start and reapplied as needed is usually enough. Just keep the surface from getting so slick that your clamping or hand position becomes unreliable.

Match the bit type to the job

A general-purpose twist bit will work for many small home projects, but it may struggle on harder metal if it’s worn or low quality. Cobalt or titanium-coated bits can help on tougher material, though the coating alone won’t fix poor technique. The key is still the combination of a marked dimple, a steady setup, and gradual cutting.

For very thin sheet metal, a step bit can sometimes start more cleanly than a large twist bit because it cuts in stages. For hardware and thicker stock, a pilot hole followed by the final bit is often the simpler, more reliable approach.

Keep the entry controlled

If the bit still wants to drift, pause and reset rather than trying to muscle through the first second of contact. Back the bit out, re-center it in the punch mark, and start again with the drill held square to the work. Once the bit has a shallow track, it usually behaves better.

A spring-loaded center punch can also be useful when you’re working alone. It creates a cleaner, more repeatable starting divot than a loose hammer strike, which can be handy on small parts where one missed blow would be annoying in the most ordinary way possible.

The cleanest holes in smooth metal usually come from a sequence, not a single trick: mark carefully, punch the spot, clamp the work, drill a pilot hole, and use the right speed and pressure. If you treat the first few seconds as the important part, the rest of the hole tends to go much more smoothly.
