Start with the tile, not the drill

The first decision is the tile itself. Glazed ceramic is usually the most forgiving. Porcelain is harder and more likely to punish a dull bit or heavy-handed pressure. Natural stone can drill cleanly, but its mineral makeup varies, so one section may behave differently from the next.

That’s why the “best” method isn’t always the fastest one. A standard twist bit can sometimes start a hole in soft tile, but it’s not the right choice for most clean, crack-free results. For ceramic and porcelain, a carbide-tipped tile bit, a diamond hole saw, or a masonry bit designed for tile will usually give you a better shot. For larger openings, especially for plumbing or fixtures, a diamond hole saw is often the more sensible choice even if it costs more up front.

Choose the right speed and pressure

Slow speed is your friend. High speed creates heat, heat makes tiles more brittle, and brittleness is how small jobs become annoying ones. Start the drill at low speed and let the bit do the cutting. You’re aiming for steady progress, not enthusiasm.

Pressure should be light to moderate. If you push hard, the bit may bind or the tile may crack under stress. If you press too lightly, the bit can wander and polish the surface instead of cutting it. The sweet spot is usually a firm but patient feed, with the drill held square to the tile.

A cordless drill gives you decent control for most small holes, while a drill with a clutch or variable speed can make the work more manageable. Hammer mode should stay off until you’re past the tile, and for many tile jobs it may never belong in the process at all. Hammering is useful in masonry, but tile itself isn't the place to get aggressive.

Keep the hole cool and clean

Heat is one of the hidden reasons tile cracks. Cooling the bit helps, especially with porcelain and diamond hole saws. Some bits work best with a small amount of water at the drilling point, while others are marketed for dry use. If you’re using water, keep it controlled so you don’t create a slip hazard or wet nearby materials unnecessarily.

Periodically withdraw the bit to clear dust and reduce friction. This also gives you a chance to check whether the hole is staying centered. A clean hole usually comes from a patient rhythm: drill a little, clear the dust, cool if needed, then continue.

Check the bit’s cooling method before you start Some tile bits are meant for dry drilling, some are better with light water cooling, and some hole saws perform best with intermittent flushing. Follow the bit’s intended use so you don’t overheat the cutting edge or the tile.

Support the tile whenever you can

Tile is less likely to crack if it’s supported well. If you’re drilling through a wall, there’s not always much you can do about the backing, but you can still reduce stress by working slowly and avoiding side pressure. If you’re drilling a loose tile before installation, place it on a flat, stable surface with a sacrificial board underneath.

Finish the hole without tearing the edges

As you get close to the far side of the tile, reduce pressure even more. The final breakthrough is where many chips happen. Let the bit finish the cut at its own pace instead of trying to hurry the last fraction of an inch.

If the hole needs to be especially neat, you can sometimes start from one side and then carefully finish from the other once you’ve made a small pilot opening. That isn’t always practical, but it can help in thicker or more visible tile where a breakout chip would be hard to hide.

After the hole is through, clean the edge before inserting the fastener or anchor. A small burr or chip can interfere with fit and make the opening look rougher than it needs to. If the edge is slightly imperfect, that’s often acceptable once the fixture covers it, but it’s still worth removing loose fragments.

When a different approach makes more sense

Not every hole should be drilled the same way. Small anchor holes in ceramic can often be handled with a tile bit and patience. Larger holes for valves, shower heads, or pipe penetrations usually call for a diamond hole saw because it gives you a cleaner circular cut and less wandering.

If you’re drilling porcelain and the bit isn’t biting, that’s often a sign to slow down rather than speed up. If you’re drilling natural stone and the surface is chipping unpredictably, a more careful start and steadier cooling may help. The trade-off is simple: slower and more deliberate usually means cleaner, while faster and more forceful usually means more risk.

For especially expensive or visible tile, it can be worth testing on a spare piece first. That’s not overcautious; it’s practical. One test hole can tell you more about the bit, the speed, and the tile’s behavior than a dozen guesses.

If you keep the drill slow, the pressure light, and the bit matched to the tile, you’ll usually get a clean hole with much less drama. The main job is to resist the urge to hurry the cut. Pick the right bit, mark carefully, support the work as well as you can, and let the tool do the cutting. That’s the combination that tends to save the tile—and your patience.
