Start with the kind of cleanup you do most often

If your garage or basement shop mostly sees sawdust, sanding dust, and the occasional spilled fastener bin, filtration should move near the top of the list. Fine particles are the real test for a shop vacuum because they can slip through lower-grade filters, clog the airflow path, and get blown right back into the room. If you also need the vac for water, you’ll want a model that can switch between dry and wet use without turning filter changes into a chore.

Capacity matters, but not in a vacuum-sealer-in-the-laundry-room way. A larger tank means fewer trips to empty debris and more room for water pickup, but it also means a heavier, less nimble machine. The better filters capture smaller particles and help keep the exhaust cleaner, which matters when you’re sweeping up drywall dust, routing MDF, or sanding filler. A wider hose is generally better for debris that isn’t truly dusty, while a narrower hose can be more flexible and easier to maneuver around a bench or under cabinets. Many small-shop users do well with a hose around 1-1/4 to 2-1/2 inches, depending on whether the vacuum will mostly handle detail cleanup or heavier debris.

Airflow is what makes the pickup feel strong, but the whole system matters more than one big number on a box. A shop vacuum with decent suction can still disappoint if the hose is too narrow, the filter is clogged, or the attachment creates a bottleneck. For that reason, it’s smart to think about the combination of hose, filter, and accessories rather than treating any single spec as the whole story.

If you expect to use the vacuum with sanders, saws, or miter saw dust ports, check compatibility with adapters before you buy. Some models are easier to connect to common tool ports, while others need extra fittings. That’s a small inconvenience until you need it every weekend.

Noise, size, and storage are more important than they look

Shop vacuums aren't known for whispering. Still, noise levels vary enough that a quieter unit can make long cleanup sessions less irritating, especially in a basement, attached garage, or shared workspace. If you work indoors often, a lower-noise model can be worth more than a slightly higher power rating.

Physical size matters in small workshops because the vacuum has to live somewhere. Check the footprint, hose storage, cord wrap, and whether the casters are stable on uneven concrete. Accessories decide whether the vacuum feels versatile or merely adequate

The right attachments can make a midrange shop vacuum feel much more capable. Crevice tools help with track cleaning and corners. Wide floor nozzles are useful for sawdust and general debris. Brush tools are handy for delicate surfaces or textured dust pickup. If you’ll clean cars, shelves, or equipment as well as the floor, a decent set of accessories will matter more than a marginal bump in power.

For wet pickup, check whether the vacuum includes a suitable squeegee attachment or wet-use nozzle. Not every model does, and that omission becomes obvious when you’re trying to clear a small flood or a spill from a rough floor. A drain plug can also be useful on larger models, since emptying water without lifting the whole tank is one of those conveniences that feels very practical very quickly.

Corded models remain common for shop use because they avoid battery runtime limits and usually offer stronger continuous operation. Cordless shop vacuums can be handy for quick cleanup, but they’re generally better as a supplement than as the main vacuum for a workshop.
