Spring Inspection for Siding Gaps Before Wind-Driven Rain Finds Them

Start with the places water usually wins
Siding problems often don’t announce themselves with one dramatic hole. More often, they begin as a loose corner, a cracked bead of sealant, a lifted overlap, or a seam that used to look tidy and no longer does. The useful comparison isn't just “does it look damaged?” but “does it still shed water the way it was designed to?”
Walk the perimeter of the house and look where two materials meet: siding to trim, trim to window casing, siding to corner boards, and siding to penetrations such as hose bibs, vents, light fixtures, and electrical service entries. These transitions are where movement, sun, and moisture fatigue the seal first. In the Pacific Northwest and Gulf Coast, repeated wetting and drying can open small paths that are easy to miss until a storm arrives sideways.
Check the seams after the first steady spring rain If the weather has already shifted into frequent rain, inspect after a wet spell rather than on a dry, bright day alone. Damp stains, soft trim, and fresh water tracks are easier to spot when the wall has recently been tested.
Separate cosmetic gaps from water-entry risks
Not every visible gap is urgent. Some siding materials are designed with overlaps, drainage space, or movement in mind, and what looks open at first glance may be normal. The question is whether the opening belongs to the system or whether it’s a break in the system.
A hairline crack in surface caulk at a trim joint is a different problem from a lifted panel edge that creates a direct path behind the siding. A tiny split in an old sealant bead may be cosmetic for a while, but a missing seal around a window head, a loose kickout flashing edge, or a separated corner joint deserves faster attention. The difference matters because some defects let water in immediately, while others mainly tell you the joint is aging and should be watched.
If you’re comparing options for repair, think in three levels. First are simple reseal jobs: sound materials, small failures, no evidence of trapped water. Second are fastening or reattachment issues: loose siding, popped nails, or shifted trim that needs to be secured before sealing. Third are investigation jobs: anything near a roof-to-wall intersection, a window, or a spot with staining, where the exterior clue may be hiding a larger flashing problem.
Follow the water path, not just the damage
Water rarely enters where the stain appears. It may travel along framing, sheathing, or the back of siding before showing up at a lower point. That’s why it helps to compare outside clues with interior signs instead of treating them as separate problems.
Inside, check for paint that’s bubbling, drywall that feels soft, baseboards that have swollen, discoloration near ceilings or around windows, and musty odors after rain. In closets and low-light rooms, a fresh stain can be easier to miss, so use your nose and your hands as well as your eyes. If a wall looks fine but smells damp after a storm, don’t assume the exterior is innocent just because the siding itself still seems neat.
Also pay attention to pattern. A single stain under one window after a wind-driven storm suggests a localized failure. Repeated moisture at several openings on the same wall may point to a bigger issue with flashing, drainage, or how that side of the house handles rain exposure. That’s especially worth noticing on gable ends, upper stories, and walls with little roof overhang.
Pay special attention to edge cases
Some of the trickiest gaps are the ones that look minor but sit in a high-risk location. A small split above a window head is more concerning than a larger opening in a sheltered spot that still drains properly. Likewise, a slightly loose piece of siding near a roofline may matter more than a more obvious flaw lower down the wall if it sits where water can be driven upward by wind.
Be cautious around sealant that has lasted only by becoming hard and cracked. Old caulk can look like protection while quietly losing adhesion at one side of the joint. It may still cover the gap, but if you can flex it or see separation at the edges, it’s no longer doing the job you want. The same goes for paint that bridges a joint but no longer seals it.
In storm-prone coastal or rain-heavy areas, it’s also smart to inspect after any exterior work elsewhere on the house. A reroof, window replacement, gutter adjustment, or even a porch repair can change how water lands and drains along a wall. The siding gap may be new, or it may have been exposed because nearby materials changed.
Decide what to fix, what to watch, and what to investigate
The simplest repairs are usually the ones where the materials are intact and the failure is clearly localized. Tighten a loose fastener if the panel can be secured without crushing it. Remove failed sealant and replace it if the joint is otherwise sound. Replace deteriorated trim pieces when the damage is confined and dry.
Watch items that are small, stable, and not tied to stains or softness. A minor cosmetic split in a noncritical area can go on a short list if the wall still sheds water well and you haven’t found nearby interior symptoms. But if a gap keeps reopening, or if multiple joints on the same wall are failing, treat that as a sign the assembly is moving more than it should.
Investigate further when the exterior clue and the interior clue don’t match, or when the gap sits near flashing, a roof intersection, a window, or a door. That’s where a quick caulk touch-up can be the wrong comparison to make; the better comparison is whether the wall’s drainage layer and flashing are still intact.
A dry-looking wall can still be a leaky one, and a messy-looking wall can sometimes be fine. The job in spring is to tell those two apart before the season’s rain does it for you. Walk the house after wet weather, compare exterior joints with interior signs, and sort each issue into repair, watch, or investigate so you can fix the real problems first.
