If water can’t move cleanly off the roof and away from the house, it will usually find a weaker path: over the edge, behind the gutter, along the foundation, or into a downspout joint that looked fine in July.
The good news is that most of the usual trouble spots are easy to inspect in one pass. You’re looking for blockages, poor slope, leaks, loose fasteners, and discharge areas that dump water too close to the house. Those are the problems that tend to stay quiet until a thaw, a storm, or a freeze-thaw cycle exposes them.
Start with the simplest failure: clogs
Leaves, seed pods, roofing grit, and bits of shingle can collect in gutters and downspouts long before they cause an obvious backup. If you’ve got trees nearby, the first places to check are the corners, the low points, and the downspout inlets. Even a partial blockage can slow water enough to let it spill over the gutter lip during a heavy rain.
Downspouts deserve their own check, not just the gutters feeding them. Water may disappear at the top but still get trapped in an elbow or buried extension. If you suspect a clog, flush the system with a hose and watch where the water slows, pools, or backs up. That usually tells you more than a quick glance from the ground.

A loose gutter joint often shows up as a stain on the fascia, a drip line on the siding, or a damp spot below a corner after rain. Seams, end caps, and outlet connections are all common leak points, especially on older sectional systems. If you can see daylight through a joint or spot a failed sealant line, that’s worth addressing before winter weather puts more stress on it.
Fasteners matter just as much. Spikes, ferrules, hidden hangers, or screws can loosen over time as wood moves and gutters fill with wet debris. A gutter that sags at one point usually starts there because the support is failing, not because the rain became more ambitious.
Make sure the discharge actually gets away from the house
A clean gutter and downspout still won’t help much if the water exits right next to the foundation. Extensions, splash blocks, and buried drains all exist for the same reason: water should be carried far enough away that it doesn’t soak the soil beside the house or run back toward the basement.
This is one of the most common missed steps because the system looks complete at roof level. But the real test is what happens at ground level after a hard rain. If the downspout ends too close to a walkway, a planted bed, a window well, or a low spot that holds water, you’re setting up a problem that tends to show itself in the wettest part of the year.
Verify where the water ends up After you inspect the gutters, trace each downspout discharge point. Make sure extensions are attached, angled correctly, and long enough to move water away from the foundation and any vulnerable low spots.
Don’t ignore the signs that the system is working too hard
Sometimes the issue isn’t one obvious defect but a system that’s undersized for the roof area or repeatedly overwhelmed by debris. Overflow at one corner, water shooting past the gutter in heavy rain, or repeated clogging in the same downspout can point to a design limit rather than a one-time repair. In those cases, a guard, an extra outlet, or a better discharge setup may help more than repeated cleanouts.
It’s also worth noticing what the house tells you. Peeling paint near the roofline, eroded mulch below a downspout, or damp soil against the foundation are all clues that water hasn’t been getting where it should. Those signs don’t always mean a major repair, but they do mean the system is worth a closer look.
A fall check works best when it’s boring in the best possible way: clean out the debris, confirm the slope, tighten the loose parts, and make sure the water leaves the property cleanly. If you do that before the season turns wet or frozen, you’re far less likely to spend spring dealing with fascia damage, foundation moisture, or a surprise drip that only appears after the first thaw. Keep the inspection simple, but don’t skip the discharge path—that’s usually where the real lesson lives.
