How to Shim a Wobbly Bookcase Without Making It Look Crooked
A bookcase can look fine and still rock on an uneven floor, but the fix isn’t always the same as the one that makes it look best. I’ll focus on the first useful steps: leveling the case, choosing visible or hidden shims, and keeping the whole thing safe and straight.
A wobbly bookcase usually means one of two things: the floor isn’t level, or the case isn’t sitting squarely on it. The fix sounds simple, but if you add shims carelessly, you can end up with a bookcase that stops rocking and starts looking crooked.
The good news is that you don’t need a complicated repair. You need a level reading, a little patience, and a plan for whether the shims should disappear from view or simply do their job quietly.
Start by finding the real problem
Before you touch the bookcase, check whether the wobble comes from the floor or from the case itself. Set a level on the top edge from side to side and front to back. If the bookcase is empty, give it a gentle push to see which corner lifts first. Often the answer is an uneven floor, but loose joints or a twisted back panel can also cause movement.
If the case is already loaded, remove enough books and objects to make it easier to move and inspect. A heavy top makes the wobble more obvious, but it also makes the unit harder to adjust. You want the case light enough to shift, but not so empty that it behaves differently once you reload it.
Check the floor and wall before you shim If the bookcase is meant to stay in one spot, verify where it touches the floor and whether the baseboard or wall is forcing it out of square. A shim can correct height, but it won’t fix a cabinet that’s being held off the wall by trim or debris.

Drywall anchors, studs, and masonry all call for different fasteners, and that choice matters more than the shim itself. Shelves should also sit squarely once the case is stable. If they rattle or bind, inspect the cabinet for twist. Sometimes the frame was already slightly out of square, and the shim simply made that easier to notice. Make the fix look intentional
If the shim is visible, keep the finish neat. A pale wood shim can stand out under a dark bookcase, so a darker composite shim may blend better. You can also place felt pads or a trim strip over the edge in some cases, but only if that doesn’t interfere with the shim’s support or the bookcase’s contact with the floor.
