Start with the cleanest setup you can manage

If you only change one thing, change the bit. A sharp brad-point bit is often the easiest choice for smaller holes in wood because its center point helps it stay put and its outer spurs score the surface before the cutting edges follow. For larger holes, a Forstner bit can leave a very clean edge, though it usually wants a drill press or a very steady hand. A basic twist bit can still work, but it’s more likely to wander or tear the paint if it’s dull or pushed too hard.

Backing matters almost as much as the bit. If you can reach the back side, clamp a scrap board tightly behind the work so the bit cuts into the scrap as it exits. That support reduces blowout dramatically. On trim or furniture where the back side is visible, this is often the difference between a hole you can live with and one that begs for filler and paint.

Check the hidden side before you drill Make sure there isn’t wiring, plumbing, hardware, or a face frame member directly behind your drilling point. If you’re working on a door, cabinet, or built-in, confirm the full depth you need so you don’t punch through something you didn’t mean to hit.

Mark the hole so the bit doesn’t skate

Painted surfaces can be slick, which means the bit may wander before it bites. A small center punch or even the tip of a nail can give the bit a starting dimple, especially on harder wood. If the finish is delicate, you can also place painter’s tape over the spot and mark on the tape. That doesn’t replace a good starting point, but it can help reduce chipping and give you a little more control as the bit begins to cut.

Use a drill speed that matches the bit and hole size. In general, smaller bits and harder woods do better at higher speeds, while larger bits and thicker pieces usually benefit from a slower, steadier pace. What you want is cutting, not burning or forcing. If you see the paint edge lifting or the bit squealing, ease off and let the tool do the work.

Control both faces of the hole

The front side is where you see the damage first, but the back side is usually where the worst splintering happens. If the workpiece is too awkward to back up with a scrap board, you can reduce tear-out by drilling almost all the way through from one side, then finishing from the other. To do that well, stop as soon as you feel the bit’s point or pilot tip begin to show through, then flip the piece and complete the hole from the opposite face. That second pass follows the first and helps both edges stay cleaner.

This two-sided approach takes a little more time, and it’s not always possible if the piece can’t be flipped easily. But for visible surfaces, it’s often worth the extra setup. A simple clamp and a sacrificial board are even better when you can use them, especially on trim, painted shelves, and furniture parts with finished backs.

Break through gently

Most splintering happens at the end of the cut, not the beginning. As the bit nears the far side, slow down and reduce pressure. If you’re using a hand drill, support it firmly so the bit doesn’t lunge when resistance drops. If the bit suddenly clears all at once, that’s when the finish tends to chip.

One useful habit is to clear chips before the bit gets packed. Pulling out occasionally keeps the cut cleaner and lowers the chance of heat buildup. It also gives you a chance to check whether the bit is still tracking where you want it. A clean hole is usually the result of patience more than force, which is mildly annoying but also reassuring.

If the hole is for a fastener or hardware piece, consider whether it really needs to be the final size from the start. Sometimes drilling a small pilot hole first and then enlarging it in a second pass gives you better control than trying to create the full diameter in one go. That’s especially helpful in painted trim or thin stock where the finish is easy to lift.

Choose the approach that fits the job

For small holes in painted trim, a sharp brad-point bit, tape, and backing scrap is usually the simplest clean solution. For larger decorative holes or hardware openings, a Forstner bit or a two-sided drilling approach may give better results. If the piece is already installed and you can’t reach the back, slow drilling, a careful start, and a very light finish at breakthrough become more important.
