The best approach depends on three things: how much of the screw is exposed, what it’s stuck in, and how much damage you can tolerate if the removal goes sideways. Sometimes the smartest move is a careful extraction. Other times, the safest choice is to stop chasing the broken screw and repair around it instead.

Start with the least aggressive option

If even a little bit of the screw remains above the surface, try to grip it before you reach for drills or extractors. Locking pliers can sometimes turn a frustrating repair into a simple one, provided there’s enough metal to grab and the screw hasn’t sheared off flush in a brittle material.

A penetrating lubricant can help if the screw is rusted or corroded, but it’s not a magic wand. Let it work for a bit, then try steady pressure rather than jerking twists. Sudden force can snap off the remaining stub or widen the damage around it.

If the broken screw is in soft wood, a small pilot hole or careful slot cut in the exposed metal may give you enough purchase for a flathead screwdriver. That’s a low-drama fix when it works, and it’s worth trying before moving to more invasive methods.

When drilling makes sense

Drilling is usually the next step when the screw is broken below the surface and nothing can be gripped. The goal is often either to center the screw so an extractor can bite, or to drill out the screw completely and repair the hole afterward. Accuracy matters here; an off-center bit can enlarge the problem fast.

A center punch helps keep the drill bit from wandering. Start small and work carefully, especially in wood, plastic, or soft metals where a larger hole can weaken the surrounding material. If the screw is in a finished surface, mask off the area first so the drill doesn’t scar the surrounding material if it slips.

Check the material before you drill

Before you commit to drilling, confirm what the screw is embedded in and how much repair you can live with. A method that’s fine in scrap wood can cause expensive damage in trim, cabinetry, tile, or metal parts with tight tolerances.

Extractors: useful, but not foolproof

Screw extractors can work well when the screw is centered and the broken fastener isn't seized too tightly. They’re meant to bite into a pilot hole and back the screw out, but they also create new risk: if the extractor binds or snaps, you can end up with hardened steel lodged in the hole, which is much harder to remove than the original screw.

That’s why extractors deserve caution rather than confidence. Use the right size, keep the hole centered, and don’t force the tool if it starts to cam out or twist awkwardly. If the screw won’t budge after reasonable effort, stop before the extractor becomes part of the problem.

For stubborn screws in harder materials, heat can sometimes help by breaking down corrosion or softening threadlocker, but use that only when the surrounding material can tolerate it. Heat near paint, plastic, adhesives, or finished surfaces can create a second repair you didn’t plan on.

Repair options when removal isn’t worth the risk

Sometimes the broken screw is so buried, seized, or awkwardly located that removal would damage the part more than leaving it alone. In that case, the repair strategy shifts from extraction to recovery. You can fill the hole, relocate the fastener, or work the screw into a less critical role if the project allows it.

In wood, that might mean drilling out the damaged area and plugging it with a dowel or wood filler, then re-drilling a fresh pilot hole nearby. In drywall or other softer wall materials, a different anchor location may be cleaner than trying to rescue a compromised hole. In metal, you may need to re-tap the hole, oversize it, or use a threaded insert if the original threads are no longer reliable.

The important judgment call is whether the fastener’s exact location really matters. If it’s holding trim, a bracket, or a non-structural cover, a nearby repair may be perfectly acceptable. If it’s part of a structural connection or safety-critical assembly, stopping to reassess is better than improvising your way into a weak joint.

Knowing when to stop

There’s a point where persistence stops being useful. If repeated drilling is wandering, the extractor is slipping, or the material around the screw is chipping away, the damage is compounding faster than the repair is progressing. That’s usually the moment to pause and choose a different path.

A good rule is to ask whether the next step will improve your odds or simply consume more material. If the answer is unclear, leave yourself room to repair the hole, replace the part, or bring in a tool better suited to the job. Breaking a screw is annoying; breaking the surrounding workpiece is usually much worse.

For that reason, the safest mindset isn't “how do I force this out?” but “what’s the least damaging way to solve the problem?” That shift makes it easier to know when to keep going and when to stop before the repair gets bigger than the original mistake.

A sensible sequence to follow

Start by trying to grip any exposed metal. If that fails, move to a centered drill-and-extract approach only if the surrounding material can handle the risk. If extraction seems likely to cause more damage, switch to a repair plan instead of pushing harder.

That sequence keeps the work controlled and gives you a way to bail out before the fix turns into a cleanup project. In home repair, that’s often the difference between a quick recovery and a long story involving a replacement part, extra filler, and a few new words you didn’t mean to say out loud.

The best outcome isn’t always removing every last bit of the broken screw. It’s restoring the function of the repair with the least damage and the fewest extra problems. Sometimes that means patient extraction. Sometimes it means a clean repair around the stub and a better fastening plan next time.
