Repairing a Stripped Screw Hole in Wood

When a screw spins in place instead of tightening, the hole is usually worn wider than the threads can grip. The good news is that you often don’t need a fancy repair; you just need to match the fix to how much strength the joint really needs.

Start with the least wasteful repair that will actually hold

For light-duty repairs, the classic toothpick or wooden matchstick trick is still useful because it is cheap, fast, and easy to reverse if needed. You coat the filler with wood glue, pack it into the hole, let it set, and drive the screw back in. It works best when the hole is only slightly enlarged and the wood around it is still solid. If you’re reattaching a cabinet knob, a hinge leaf with minimal stress, or a small bracket, this can be enough.

A wooden plug is the next step up when the hole is too loose for a toothpick fix but the surrounding wood is still worth saving. You drill or clean the hole to a known size, glue in a matching dowel or plug, let it dry, and then predrill a new pilot hole. This takes more time, but it restores more of the wood fiber than stuffing the hole with scraps. For furniture or visible cabinet parts, it also tends to look cleaner.

If the screw is carrying more load, sometimes the most economical choice is simply a larger or longer screw. That only makes sense if there’s enough thickness left in the material and the new screw won’t split the wood or poke through where it shouldn’t. It’s a quick fix for a door hinge or latch plate, but it’s not a cure-all. A bigger screw can solve a weak grip in decent wood; it can also turn a marginal repair into a cracked one.

Before you choose a fix, check the wood and the load If the hole is in particleboard, swollen MDF, or soft, crumbling wood, the repair options change fast. Decide first whether you need a stronger grip, a cleaner appearance, or both—because the cheapest method isn’t always the one that saves the job.

When the hole needs a real mechanical repair

Threaded inserts are worth considering when a screw may need to be removed and reinstalled, or when you want a more durable threaded connection in wood that gets regular use. They cost more than glue-and-filler approaches and take a bit more care to install, but they give you a reusable metal thread instead of asking damaged wood to keep doing all the work. For adjustable furniture, removable hardware, or parts that get serviced often, that can be money well spent.

The trade-off is that inserts require enough material around the hole to support them. In thin stock or damaged panel edges, they may not be a great fit. They also demand more accurate drilling than a quick toothpick repair. If you’re trying to save a decorative cabinet door or a chair part that’s seen better days, the insert may be the right long-term answer; if you just need a hinge to stop wobbling, it may be more repair than you need.

Relocating the screw hole is often the least glamorous option, but it’s sometimes the smartest one. If the original hole is badly blown out, if the surrounding wood is soft, or if the fastener sits in a noncritical spot where a fresh hole won’t show, moving the screw a short distance can save time and frustration. You avoid relying on compromised material, and you can move straight to a properly drilled pilot hole in stronger wood.

This is especially helpful when a repair is hidden or when the part has room for a small shift. A hinge plate, for example, may tolerate a new hole just fine if the old one is too far gone. The downside is obvious: relocation can leave old holes visible, so it’s not always the best choice for exposed furniture unless appearance matters less than speed.

Match the repair to the material and the job

Solid hardwood gives you the most options. It usually accepts toothpick repairs, plugs, larger screws, and inserts better than softer or manufactured wood products. If the damage is modest, a simple filler-and-screw fix can last a surprisingly long time. If the screw hole is in a high-stress area, though, you’re usually better off moving to a plug or insert rather than hoping compressed fibers will keep holding forever.

Softwood is more forgiving to work with but also easier to strip again if you over-tighten. Here, predrilling matters, and so does stopping once the screw is snug. A repair can fail simply because the replacement screw was driven too aggressively. That’s one reason a stronger repair method can be cheaper in the long run than repeating a quick fix every few months.

Particleboard and MDF are the least forgiving. They don’t regain strength the way solid wood can, and stripped holes often mean the material around the screw has lost much of its structure. In those cases, toothpicks and glue can buy time, but a plug, a larger repair area, or relocation often makes more sense. If the board is swollen, crushed, or flaking, you may be patching a problem that wants a different solution entirely.

A sensible way to choose

If the screw is lightly loaded and the wood is still healthy, start with the simplest repair that restores bite. Toothpicks or a small glued filler are cheap, quick, and often sufficient. If the hole is too loose for that or you care about appearance, move to a wooden plug. If the fastener needs to come out and go back in repeatedly, a threaded insert is usually the more durable investment.

If the material is poor or the hole is badly damaged, don’t feel obligated to rescue the exact spot. Relocating the fastener can save time, material, and patience, which is a respectable trade in home repair. The point isn’t to choose the most elaborate fix; it’s to choose the least expensive repair that still matches the stress on the joint.

For cabinet and furniture work, that usually means starting small, testing the result, and only stepping up when the first repair doesn’t seem trustworthy. Drill a proper pilot hole for the replacement screw, stop as soon as the screw seats firmly, and avoid forcing a weak repair to do heavy lifting. A little restraint here saves a lot of second attempts later.
