A monthly check doesn’t need to be elaborate. What matters is looking for the small mistakes that hide in plain sight: fasteners backing out, metal hardware rusting, joints shifting, and wood beginning to split around screw heads. If you catch those early, you can often tighten, seal, or replace a few parts before the steps start feeling springy or unsafe.

Start with movement, then work down to the hardware

Begin by standing on each step and giving it a gentle bounce or shift of weight. You’re not trying to test it like a demolition crew; you’re looking for motion that seems new, exaggerated, or uneven. Pay attention to any step that squeaks, tilts, or feels different from the others. That usually points to a loose connection somewhere in the structure or the fasteners that hold the treads and risers in place.

Next, look closely at the visible screws, nails, brackets, and bolts. Fasteners should sit snugly without spinning freely, backing out, or leaving obvious gaps. If you see a screw head raised above the surface, that’s a small clue that vibration, wood movement, or shrinking material has started to work it loose. The fix may be as simple as tightening it, but repeated loosening usually means there’s a deeper issue worth tracing.

Look for corrosion, splits, and water traps

Even if the head still looks usable, hidden corrosion can weaken the grip and make future removal harder. If hardware is badly rusted, deformed, or flaking, plan to replace it rather than assume another tightening will solve things.

Wood deserves just as much attention. Check for split boards around screw holes, crushed fibers where fasteners have over-tightened, and edges that have softened from repeated wetting. If a board is cracked right at a fastener, the screw may no longer be holding much at all. That’s a common mistake: assuming the fastener is fine because it’s still present, when the surrounding wood is what has given up.

Water-trapping details are especially important on exterior steps. Look for flat surfaces where water sits, joints that stay damp, and places where debris collects behind a tread or under a stringer. Poor drainage and trapped leaves can keep fasteners wet long after the rain stops, which speeds up corrosion and wood decay. Small gaps for drainage are useful; sealed pockets that stay soggy aren't.

Focus on the parts that age fastest

The fastest-moving problems are usually at the connections: tread-to-stringer screws, bracket fasteners, handrail attachments, and any exposed metal connectors. These are the places where vibration, weather, and foot traffic all team up against you. If the steps get used every day, especially by tenants, kids, or delivery traffic, you may notice wear sooner than you’d expect.

It helps to compare one side of the stairs to the other. If one fastener pattern looks newer, more rusted, or more disturbed than the rest, ask why. Sometimes a repair was made with the wrong screw type, or a previous patch covered damage without solving the source. In exterior work, the difference between a sensible repair and a recurring nuisance is often the choice of material. Use hardware intended for exterior use and compatible with the surrounding materials.

Verify hardware before you replace it: Fastener size, material, and coating all matter outdoors, and requirements can vary by product and local conditions. Check the existing hardware and the manufacturer’s recommendations before buying replacements, especially if the stairs are attached to treated lumber or exposed to heavy moisture.

Make the monthly check quick enough to keep doing it

A routine only works if it’s realistic. The easiest approach is to inspect the steps at the same time each month you already handle exterior maintenance, such as gutter cleaning or trash-bin day. Walk the stairs slowly, look from the side and from above, and use a flashlight if the underside is visible. You’re looking for changes, not perfection.
