How to Maintain a Sump Pump Before the Wet Season
Heavy rain is unforgiving when a sump pump has a clogged pit, a sticky float, or a discharge line that can’t move water away fast enough. I’ll walk through the checks that matter most so you can spot weak points before the wet season tests the system.
If your basement depends on a sump pump, the wet season isn't the time to discover a small fault that’s been hiding all year. The good news is that most problems show up in a few predictable places: the pit, the float, the discharge path, the power connection, and any backup system you rely on when the lights go out.
Start with the pit and pump body
Open the sump pit and look for silt, gravel, leaves, or other debris that could interfere with the pump. A clean pit lets the float move freely and reduces the chance that debris gets sucked into the intake or jams a moving part. If the water level is low, this is a good time to check whether the pump sits upright and stable, rather than leaning against the side of the basin.
You should also look at the pump itself for obvious signs of wear: rust, cracked housing, a damaged cord, or mineral buildup around the intake. None of those guarantees failure, but they’re often clues that the pump has been working harder than it should or sitting in damp conditions for too long.
Check the float and switch action
The float is one of the most important parts to test because it tells the pump when to turn on and off. Gently lift it by hand and make sure it moves without sticking, rubbing the side of the pit, or getting caught on the cord. Then lower it and confirm it returns to its resting position cleanly.
If your pump uses a tethered float, leave enough clearance for a full arc of motion. If it uses a vertical switch, make sure nothing around the pit is blocking the switch assembly. A float that works only when you nudge it just right is the kind of problem that tends to appear during a heavy storm, which is exactly when you don’t want to be improvising.
Make sure water can leave the house
A sump pump is only as useful as the discharge path it sends water through. Follow the discharge pipe or hose and check for loose joints, cracks, sagging sections, or freezing risk if your climate still has cold snaps as the wet season begins. The outlet should carry water far enough away from the foundation that it won’t simply circle back into the basement drainage area.
If there’s a check valve on the line, make sure it’s installed in the correct direction and not stuck. A faulty or missing check valve can let water run back into the pit after each cycle, forcing the pump to work more often than necessary. That extra cycling can turn a small efficiency problem into a reliability problem.
Verify the discharge route before the first heavy rain Make sure the line is open, pitched correctly, and emptying where water won’t return to the foundation. If your setup uses extensions, freeze protection, or a buried outlet, confirm that each part is clear and intact now—not during a downpour.
Test the power supply and alarm systems
Plug the pump into a grounded outlet and check that the cord is in good condition, with no cuts, corrosion, or signs of overheating. If the plug is on a GFCI-protected outlet, test that the outlet itself is functioning properly. A tripped or failed GFCI can leave the pump powerless even though the unit looks ready.
It’s also worth confirming any high-water alarm, smart monitor, or dedicated circuit is working as expected. Those features aren’t mandatory, but they can give you an early warning if the pump is running too often or the water level is rising faster than usual.
Don’t forget the backup plan
If you have a battery backup pump, inspect the battery age, charge status, and controller indicators. Batteries don’t last forever, and a backup system with a weak or dead battery can create a false sense of security. If the system uses distilled water or periodic maintenance, follow the manufacturer’s routine rather than guessing.
For homes that depend on a generator during outages, make sure the pump’s circuit can actually be powered by the generator setup you plan to use. If you don’t have backup power at all, the wet season is the time to decide whether you want one, not after a storm has already flooded the neighborhood.
Run a simple test cycle
Once everything looks clean and connected, pour enough water into the pit to raise the float and start the pump. Watch the whole cycle: the pump should start promptly, move water steadily, shut off cleanly, and leave the pit at a normal level. Then listen for grinding, humming without pumping, or rapid on-off cycling, all of which can indicate trouble.
If the pump struggles, check the obvious causes first. A stuck float, a blocked discharge line, or a clogged intake is much easier to fix than a failed motor. If the pump still won’t perform normally after basic checks, replacement may be more sensible than waiting for a storm to reveal the same problem at full scale.
When replacement makes more sense
Sometimes maintenance tells you the pump is near the end of its useful life. Frequent cycling, persistent noise, visible corrosion, or repeated failures to start are all signs that repair may not be the smartest use of time. If the unit is older and you’re already seeing more than one warning sign, replacing it before the wet season can be a lot less stressful than gambling on one more year.
The same logic applies to backup batteries and worn discharge components. A sump pump system works best when each part can do its job without heroic effort. Before the rainy season begins in earnest, give the system a clean pit, a free-moving float, an open discharge path, a dependable power source, and a backup plan that’s actually ready to help.
