How to Fasten Two Boards When Their Faces Aren't Flush

You need to control the alignment first, then fasten in a way that pulls the boards together instead of skating them farther apart.

Start by deciding what kind of mismatch you’re dealing with

If the boards are only slightly out of plane, clamps and screw placement may be enough. If one board is warped, you may need to hold it into position while you fasten it. If the difference is caused by uneven supports or a hidden twist, the problem may not be the boards themselves but where they’re being joined. That matters, because the fix is different depending on whether you’re correcting the parts or compensating for the layout.

For a small face-to-face mismatch, you’re usually trying to do two things at once: bring the surfaces into the same plane and keep them there long enough for the fastener to do its job. That means clamping isn't just for convenience. It’s part of the joint strategy.

Check the fit before you drive a screw Dry-fit the boards, sight across the faces, and decide which board needs to move. If you’re about to fasten them permanently, it’s much easier to verify the alignment now than to back out a screw after the boards have shifted.

Use clamps to force the faces into alignment

A clamp can hold the boards flush while you fasten them, but only if it’s applied in the right direction. If the goal is to pull one face up or down to match the other, the clamp has to press in a way that closes that gap. Sometimes a simple bar clamp across the joint is enough. Other times, you’ll need one clamp to bring the boards together and another to hold the higher board down or the lower board up.

If the board wants to slip while you tighten the clamp, try placing a scrap block nearby so the clamp pressure lands where you need it. A block can also spread the force and reduce denting, which is especially useful on soft wood. The point isn't to crush the joint into obedience; it’s to hold the pieces where you actually want them.

Pilot holes help the screw pull instead of split

Once the boards are aligned, pilot holes let the screw draw the joint together with less risk of splitting the wood or forcing the pieces to shift. That matters even more when the faces aren't flush, because the screw is already working against a mismatch. A properly sized pilot hole reduces friction and gives the fastener a cleaner path.

If you’re joining thicker material, it often helps to drill a clearance hole in the first board and a pilot hole in the second. That way the screw can pull the boards snug without binding early. In practical terms, this lets the screw do the clamping work while the clamp keeps the surfaces where they belong.

Screw placement matters, too. If you drive a screw too close to the edge of the higher board, it can encourage splitting or even worsen the warp. Place the fastener so it pulls the boards together across the mismatch rather than just pinning one side down. In many joints, a couple of well-placed screws do more good than a crowd of them.

Shims are for gaps, not for wishful thinking

If the boards are off because one side is sitting low, a shim can support the lower board or fill an uneven space so the faces meet more cleanly. That’s especially helpful when you’re fastening boards to a frame, substructure, or rough backing where the support isn’t perfectly even. A shim doesn’t make bad lumber good, but it can stop a minor difference from turning into a visible step.

Use shims sparingly and keep them where they’re actually supporting the joint. A shim shoved into the wrong spot can create a new twist or turn one mismatch into two. Trim or snap off any excess after the fasteners are set so the repair doesn’t telegraph through the finished work.

Choose the fastening method that matches the problem

For a simple edge or face joint with only a slight height difference, clamps plus screws are often enough. If the boards are thicker, or the mismatch keeps returning as you tighten, you may need to fasten in stages: align, clamp, check, then drive the first screw before adding the rest. That staged approach gives you a chance to correct movement before it becomes permanent.

If the boards are badly twisted or cupped, sometimes the smarter move is to reduce the stress first rather than fight it with more screws. You might reposition the board so the natural bow works in your favor, or choose a different board if the one you have is too far out of shape. Fasteners can persuade wood, but they can’t magically straighten a stubborn board without consequences.

A few habits make the joint easier

Mark the face that needs to end up proud or flush before you start. That keeps you from “helping” the wrong board in the wrong direction. It also helps to drill and clamp in a sequence you can repeat, because once the boards start moving, the process gets harder to improvise.

Use enough pressure to hold alignment, but not so much that the boards bow under the clamp. And if the screws seem to be forcing the boards apart as they go in, stop and check whether the pilot holes are too small, the clamp has shifted, or the joint needs a shim. The fix is usually small, but it has to happen before the screw is all the way home.

When you’re done, sight across the faces and feel the joint with your hand. Your eyes will catch most major problems, but your hand will notice the little ridge that becomes obvious under paint or finish. That final check is worth the few extra seconds, because a flush joint is a lot easier to admire than to explain away.

Hold the boards where you want them, give the screws an easy path, and support any gap that would otherwise pull the joint out of plane.
