The safest choice is usually the one that keeps the work within your comfortable reach, even if it means moving the ladder more often or switching to a different tool.
Stable placement matters more than convenience
The first mistake is treating a ladder as if it can adapt to a bad surface. Soft soil, loose gravel, slick pavement, and sloped ground all make the ladder less predictable. If the feet can shift or sink, every movement you make gets amplified.
Set the ladder on firm, level footing whenever possible. If the surface isn’t level, use the right leveling method or choose another approach rather than improvising with scraps of wood, bricks, or other makeshift supports. A quick setup that wobbles isn't a time saver once you’re on it.
For extension ladders, the setup angle matters too. A ladder that’s too steep can tip backward; one that’s too shallow can slide out. The extra few minutes usually beat the risk of balancing at the edge of your reach.
Overreaching turns minor tasks into awkward ones
Overreaching is one of the fastest ways to make a small job unsafe. It’s tempting when you only need to touch up a corner, clear one gutter section, or tighten one loose fitting. But leaning too far to one side moves your center of gravity outside the ladder’s stable zone.

Painting trim, cleaning gutters, washing windows, and replacing fixtures on the outside of the house all look straightforward from the ground. Once you’re up there, you may find wind, damp surfaces, insects, loose siding, or electrical lines that weren’t part of the plan.
That’s why small jobs deserve the same setup discipline as larger ones. For example, a quick light-bulb change near an entry can become awkward if the ladder has to sit on a sloped walkway.
