How to Fix a Cabinet Door That Is Square but Still Won't Close

Open the door slowly and watch where it stops. If it closes most of the way and then meets resistance, look for a contact point between the door edge and the face frame, the neighboring door, a shelf, or even a pull handle. A door can be perfectly square and still hang up if the reveal is uneven by a small amount or if one corner is brushing before the rest of the door settles into place.
A thin strip of paper can help you find the obstruction. Slide it along the gap around the door, and note where it snags or won’t move freely. If the contact happens only at one corner, the fix may be simpler than you expect: a shelf pin out of place, a hinge arm that’s not fully seated, or a neighboring door that’s crowding this one.
Check whether the hinge is doing what you think it is
European-style concealed hinges are adjustable, but they don’t fix every problem. If the hinge cup is loose in the door, if the mounting plate has shifted, or if the hinge arm is bent, the door may track correctly in the open position and still fail at the last inch of closure. That’s especially true when the door seems square in isolation but doesn’t sit square in relation to the cabinet box.

If any screw holes have stripped, the hinge can drift under the door’s weight, which changes the closing angle even when the door itself hasn’t warped.
Verify the hinge type before you adjust If your cabinet uses concealed hinges, identify whether they offer side-to-side, in-out, or depth adjustment, and make small changes one screw at a time. If the hinge is a face-frame or butt hinge, the fix may involve repositioning, shimming, or repairing worn screw holes instead.
Look for cabinet movement, not just door movement
A cabinet box that has shifted even slightly can make a square door act wrong. If the cabinet isn’t level, racked, or securely fastened to the wall, the door may hang cleanly at one point in the swing and bind at another. This is more common in older installations, especially if the cabinet was loaded heavily or the fasteners have loosened over time.

The same idea applies to the cabinet opening itself. Painted face frames, especially on older cabinets, can swell or chip in a way that creates a tiny but stubborn obstruction. If a corner closes and then springs back open, you may be dealing with a frame issue rather than a door alignment issue.
Adjust in the order that reduces confusion
If the door is square and the cabinet is sound, make adjustments in a deliberate sequence. Start with the hinge mounting screws to confirm the hardware is tight. Then make side-to-side changes to even the reveal. After that, use depth adjustment, if available, to move the door in or out so it clears the frame without rubbing. Finish with height only if the door is still catching at the top or bottom.
That order matters because depth and side-to-side movement can change the way a door closes more than height does. Small changes go a long way. A quarter turn may be enough to solve the problem, and going farther can create a new interference point on the opposite side.
When the adjustment won’t hold
If the door closes properly once and then drifts back out of alignment, the issue is usually worn screw holes, a loose hinge plate, or cabinet movement under load.
