If you’re sensitive to noise or working early in the day, the extra racket can be a real drawback. Hearing protection is a good idea either way, but an impact driver makes it more important.

They can also be harsher on fasteners and materials if you’re not careful. The rapid impacts are useful, but they can chew up screw heads or drive a fastener too far if you keep your finger planted. On exterior work, that’s not a reason to avoid one altogether, but it is a reason to start slowly and choose quality bits and appropriate deck screws.
