How to Choose the Right Sandpaper Grit for a Patch, Finish, or Paint Job

I’ll explain how to compare sandpaper grits for drywall patches, wood repairs, painted surfaces, and final smoothing so you can choose the least aggressive grit that still gets the job done. My aim is to make the progression clear enough that you can avoid over-sanding and still reach a clean finish.

Choosing sandpaper grit is mostly about matching the abrasive to the material and starting as fine as the job allows. Too coarse, and you create scratches or dips you’ll have to remove later; too fine, and you spend more time sanding than fixing.

Start with the surface, not the number

Grit numbers work in reverse of what many beginners expect: lower numbers are coarser, higher numbers are finer. A 60-grit sheet removes material quickly, while 220-grit is much gentler and better for final smoothing. That basic scale matters, but the right choice also depends on whether you’re working on drywall compound, wood filler, paint, or bare wood.

The safest habit is to begin with the least aggressive grit that can still level the repair in a reasonable amount of time. If the patch is only slightly proud of the surrounding surface, you may not need anything especially coarse. If the repair is bulky, hardened, or uneven, you may need a more aggressive starting point and then step through finer grits.

For drywall patches, keep the progression moderate

Drywall joint compound sands easily, so you usually don’t need rough paper unless the patch is badly shaped. For a typical patched seam or nail hole, 120- to 150-grit is often a good starting range. It cuts the compound efficiently without gouging the paper face of the drywall.

If the patch is clearly high, you can start around 100-grit, but move carefully. Once the patch is nearly flush, switch to 180-grit or 220-grit to soften the edges and blend the repair into the surrounding wall. The goal isn't to erase every trace of the patch by force; it’s to make the transition smooth enough that primer and paint can do the rest.

Check the repair under raking light Before you keep sanding, hold a light at a shallow angle across the wall. That makes ridges, low spots, and paper scuffs easier to see, so you can stop before you sand through the repair or damage the drywall face.

For wood repairs, think about how much shaping you need

Wood filler, patching compound, and cured glue all sand differently, but the general rule is the same: use the coarsest grit only for shaping, then refine quickly. For leveling a wood patch, 80- to 100-grit is a common starting point if you need to remove obvious ridges or excess filler. For lighter cleanup, 120-grit is often enough.

After the repair is close to flush, move to 150- or 180-grit, then finish around 220-grit before painting or staining, depending on the project. If you’re working on a visible trim piece or furniture repair, finer final sanding usually pays off. If the surface will be painted and hidden in everyday use, you may not need to go beyond 180-grit.

Bare wood is different from a patch because the grain can raise and scratch patterns can show through finish. In those cases, the final sanding grit matters as much as the starting grit. A smoother finish usually comes from a careful progression rather than trying to make one grit do everything.

For painted surfaces, use the gentlest grit that still dulls the finish

When you’re sanding paint for touch-up or repainting, the goal is usually adhesion and blending, not aggressive removal. A fine grit such as 180- to 220-grit is often enough to scuff the surface so primer or paint can grab. If you’re just easing the edge of an old paint ridge or knocking down a small drip, 220-grit may be the best choice.

If the painted area has a thicker ridge, dried brush marks, or a small repair that needs blending, you can step to 150-grit and then finish finer. Be cautious on older painted surfaces, especially if you don’t know what’s underneath. In some homes, older coatings may require extra care, so it’s wise to verify the paint situation and use appropriate precautions if you suspect lead-based paint.

Use grit progression instead of forcing one sheet to do every job

A simple progression keeps you from overworking the surface. Coarser grits remove shape defects. Medium grits erase the deeper scratches left behind. Fine grits prepare the surface for primer, paint, stain, or finish.

For many patch jobs, that means moving from something like 100 or 120 grit to 180 or 220 grit. For wood repairs that need more shaping, you might begin at 80 grit and still finish at 220. You don’t always need every step in between, but you do need to think in stages. If you jump straight from a coarse grit to paint, the scratch marks may show through. If you start too fine, the repair may never level properly.

A useful shortcut is to look at the finish you want. For paint, the last sanding step is usually moderate-to-fine. For staining or clear finish on wood, you may want a smoother final pass, but not so smooth that the stain has trouble penetrating evenly. For drywall, a very fine final sanding can help, but only if the patch is already flat.

Avoid the most common sanding mistakes

The biggest mistake is using a grit that’s too aggressive for too long. Sandpaper cuts faster than most beginners expect, and a few extra passes can turn a small high spot into a low spot. Once that happens, you’re not sanding anymore—you’re fixing the sanding.

Another common problem is skipping from coarse directly to finish grit. The deep scratches from the first sheet don’t disappear just because you changed paper; they need to be reduced step by step. The closer you get to the finished surface, the more the job depends on control and patience rather than pressure.

Pressure is another trap. Let the abrasive do the work. If you press hard, you round edges, leave uneven patches, and wear out the paper faster. Light, even sanding gives you more control and usually a cleaner result.

A simple way to choose

If you’re unsure where to start, ask two questions: how much material do I need to remove, and what does the final surface need to look like? Heavy shaping calls for lower grit. Final smoothing calls for higher grit. Most patch-and-paint work lands somewhere in the middle, with 120- to 180-grit doing much of the work and 220-grit used for cleanup and blending.

When in doubt, start finer than you think and test a small area. If it’s too slow, step down one grit. That approach takes a little longer to think through, but it usually saves time overall because you’re less likely to damage the repair.

For a drywall patch, a painted wall, or a small wood repair, the best sandpaper is rarely the toughest one in the pack. It’s the one that removes just enough, then gets out of the way.
